Selecting the right KVM Switch

The KVM switch is a device that is used to manage multiple computers or servers in one centralized location. These devices are available with multiple user control and different output port amounts! When selecting the proper KVM switch, several items must be considered.

First and foremost, you need to consider what kind of application your KVM switch will be used in. KVM switches can become very expensive when being used for large scale corporate environments like server rooms and data centers. So, if you only need to switch between 2 or 3 computers, a SOHO or desktop KVM switch should suffice. Now if you are an IT manager searching for an easy solution to monitoring hundreds of servers, you will need something that is quite a bit larger; with more features and a broader range of control. Once you have decided what kind of application you will be using the KVM switch in, you can move on to selecting more specific components of the switch, like video and peripheral connectivity.

KVM switches can be purchased in many different variations depending on the type of computers or servers your application uses. KVM switch peripheral connectivity is available in three formats: PS2, USB, and Sun. Sun compatibility is usually built into a PS2 or USB KVM switch. So, first you need to select which type of peripheral is going to be used. If you plan on mixing between PS2 and USB devices, a multi-platform KVM switch will need to be used.

PS2 KVM Switches features ports for connectivity between PS2 desktop computers and/or servers and KVM switches.

USB KVM Switches allow for the monitoring and access of multiple USB computers/servers by one keyboard, mouse, and display.

With the different video displays that are used in computer networking environments, KVM switches have been developed to support different display types. Standard KVM switches support VGA video, however DVI KVM switches are also available for sale. PS2 and USB options are usually available for each type of switch!

The most recent addition to this market is the digital KVM over IP or IP KVM Switch . These devices allow IT managers to access the KVM switch remotely over an IP connection, usually Java based. The server and computers that are being monitored are directly connected to the KVM switch, however users can still access the information for anywhere in the world over IP. This is the type of device that is perfect for a large scale management solution.
